Dynamic Monitoring of the Urban Expansion in Xiamen City and Analysis of Its Driving Forces Based on Remote Sensing Image

Based on remote sensing images of 1993,2001 and 2007,land use information in Xiamen city was extracted by the methods of maximum-like,spatial overlay,and transfer matrix.The urban expanded areas of Xiamen from 1993 to 2007 were calculated.Moreover,the spatial characteristics and driving forces of urban expansion were also analyzed.At last,the spatial optimized strategies of urban expansion in Xiamen were discussed.The result revealed that the area of changed land use was about 35.79 % from 1993 to 2007,and the area of changed land use from 1993 to 2001 was about doubled that of 2001—2007.The rate of urban expanded areas was about 6.35 % p.a.from 1993 to 2007,and there were more than 50 % areas expanded converted from the plantation.The study also showed the key driving forces of urban expansion included the economic development,population growth,foreign investment,governmental policy,and natural geographical environment.
