Synthesis and Performances Evaluation on Borated Succinimide Methyl Oleate

Borated succinimide methyl oleate was synthesized from succinimide,triethanolamine,hydrogenperoxide,methyl oleate and boric acid. The anti-wear/friction-reducing performance and detergent/dispersantproperty of borated succinimide methyl oleate in rapeseed oil were evaluated by four-ball machine and crankcasesimulation test respectively.The anti-wear/anti-frictional mechanism of borated succinimide methyl oleate wasdiscussed by means of scanning electron microscopy(SEM)and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS).The lastnonseizure load and weld load of rapeseed oil increased with the addition of borated succinimide methyl oleate,while the wear scar diameter and frictional coefficient decreased,and the coking amount decreased gradually.When the addition of borated succinimide methyl oleate was 2.5%,the last nonseizure load increased from 674 Nto 980 N,an increase of about 45%.The weld load increased from 1236 N to 2452 N,which increased about 98%.The wear scar diameter decreased from 0.62 mm to 0.40 mm,which decreased about 35%.Frictional coefficientdecreased from 0.071 to 0.053,which decreased about 25%.The coking amount decreased from 28.2 mg to 18.9 mg,which decreased about 33%.Aluminum sheet rating also dropped from level 10 to level 5.5,an increase of 4.5 levels.It was concluded that borated succinimide methyl oleate was a multifunctional additive with good anti-wear/friction-reducing performance and detergent/dispersant property.XPS analysis showed that the high-strength adsorptionfilm and tribochemical reaction film formed on the frictional surface had excellent anti-wear/friction-reductionperformance.(Charts 8 Tables2 References6)
