Spatial Structure of Shanghai Conurbation Area from Perspective of Inter-City Functional Links

This paper analyzes inter-city commuting patterns between Shanghai and its surrounding cities, explores the spatial structure of the Shanghai conurbation region and discusses the corresponding planning strategy for Shanghai Metropolitan Area. By measuring and analyzing the characteristics of inflow and outflow commuting between Shanghai and other cities, it is found that the jobs-housing spatial relationship of Shanghai has spread to surrounding cities. The commuting links between Shanghai and surrounding cities have an obvious bidirectional characteristic. The high-frequency inter-city functional links have a significant impact on spatial structure of the conurbation region, which is moving toward functional polycentricity. Therefore, we suggest that the planning of the Shanghai Metropolitan Area should pay more attention to inter-city functional links such as inter-city commuting and its impacts on spatial structure. The spatial system supporting inter-city functional links should be incorporated into the planning contents.
