TANG Zilai,ZHAO Miaoxi
In the process of economic globalization, development of Yangtze River Delta Region has been increasingly linked with global economy, leading to new trends in the transformation of urban system. This paper discusses economic globalization and urban transformation, using approaches of interlocking network and value -added hierarchy.Three features have been identified.First,Shanghai is playing the role of gateway city with both outward orientation to the global network and inward orientation to the regional hinterland.Secondly, within the region, firms are the agents to interlock cities into a network of both hierarchy and hinterland dimensions. Thirdly, spatial division of labor in the process of economic globalization has brought about the transformation of spatial configuration of regional economy from an industrial composition into a value-added hierarchy.
