New Town and Spatial Restructure in Shanghai

ZHENG Degao,SUN Juan(China Academy of Urban Planning & Design Shanghai Branch,No 5,Lane 1135,Yan'an road,Jing'an district,Shanghai 200041,China)
UK's New Urbanism Theory has influenced the urbanism theories and practices in China for a long time. Both Shanghai's "1966"spatial structure system and Beijing's "two corridors, two belts and multi-hubs" pattern wish to build new satellite towns to relieve the central cities' pressure. However, the actual development of new towns is not as we thought, and central cities still kept on expanding. Is it because of the limitation of our planning theory,or problems lies in planning practice? How could planners do to improve the spatial structure of large cities? With these questions,we reviewed Shanghai's spatial development and found that Shanghai's "1966" spatial structure system only existed in name. However, some new "edge towns" geographically close to the central city appeared in Shanghai's two wings, which attracted new industries started to congregate.Focusing on the transformation process of how these "edge towns" developed into "edge cities",as well as constructing a new spatial system including central city, edge city, inclusive city, industrial cities will be a new development direction for the city spatial structure system regulation of Shanghai.
